Three Superpowers of Spirulina

Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on Earth - 3.5 billion years old, in fact. Not only that, it’s one of the most sustainable. Better yet, it’s really good for you.

It’s no surprise that WE’re superfans of this superfood. Check out what makes spirulina so special.

It’s one of the most environmentally efficient crops

This blue-green beauty is one of the most sustainable crops on the planet. Since it’s an algae, it grows super quickly and can be cultivated almost anywhere. It produces twenty times more protein per acre than crops like corn and soybeans and uses ten times less water to grow. It can thrive on non-crop land, so they don’t compete with other agricultural products. The best part? It uses sunlight to convert CO2 into water, which means it reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere!

It’s a complete protein and high in antioxidants

Spirulina might be tiny, but it’s definitely mighty. It has roughly 60% protein, making it a richer source of protein than most veggies. It also helps with digestion and promotes good gut health. Its high antioxidant levels help to detox harmful heavy metals.

It’s helping address food insecurity and malnutrition

Spirulina has been saving the day in places where food access is uncertain and nutritious food is scarce. It’s been the subject of scientific research in malnourished children in Gaza and India and HIV-positive individuals in Cameroon, and results have shown that people who receive spirulina saw positive results, like increased weight and height gain and reduced malnutrition.
