We Stand By Small Changes for Sustainability

We did it! We made it to the new decade. With a new year comes an opportunity for a fresh start. Cue that gym membership and that weight-loss goal! But, new year’s resolutions can be a drag to sustain. Making huge lifestyle changes might - can be -  be intimidating --and hard -- new year, new you? No thanks! Instead of totally revamping yourself, small changes can actually be better for you, easier to keep up, and ultimately help you build more momentum in the long run.

So, what can you do to kick-start the new year with some new habits that are healthy for you and Mother Earth? Tons of things! And the best part is they don’t require you to totally change yourself with the flip of a switch. Small changes can have big impacts, so start with something you know you can commit to and build from there.

Instead of going full vegan right away, maybe substitute one meat-based option per meal with a yummy plant-based alternative. Or, you could give Meatless Mondays a go! One study found that replacing meat with veggies for a few meals could cut a person’s greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 30% and a fully vegan diet can reduce it up to an amazing 85%! So even replacing meat for one meal or one day a week can put you on the path to helping crush the climate crisis, and also help your health by reducing your risk of things like type-2 diabetes and obesity. -- Now --That’s what we call plant power!

Maybe you’re looking to update your style but want to do it sustainably? Skip the fast-fashion -- so not chic! Try thrifting your gently-used threads to a local thrift store or donating them to a good cause so you can make room for your fresh-to-death 2020 wardrobe. Peruse the racks of consignment shops for upcycled gems that you won’t be able to find at big-box clothing stores. It’s more fun, less expensive, and way more beneficial for the planet.

Finally-- skip the single-use stuff. Creating more trash is, well…trashy. Reusable is the way to go for the new decade and beyond. Find quality cups, containers, straws, bags, and more to help you generate less waste and reduce your carbon footprint. Looking for gifts this year? Reusable items make great presents and will help your friends and fam hop on the sustainability bandwagon, too!

These are just a few things to inspire you on your journey for a better you and a better planet! Remember: start small for bigger results.
