We’re Dreaming of a Waste-Free Christmas

‘Tis the season for celebrations of all kinds! We made it through another year and it’s time to party. Though the holidays can be a time for friends, family, and festivities, all our merrymaking can also bring about a huge amount of waste. Americans throw away 25% more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, which equals 25 million tons of garbage -- an average of 1 million tons per week! Very un-merry.

How can we be mindful of the planet while still spreading holiday cheer? It’s easier than you think! We put together a list of simple things you can do to keep your Chrismahanukwanzakah celebrations sustainable.

  1. Nix the store-bought gift wrap -- Gift wrap might make your presents look extra chic, but after the gifts have been opened, most of it will end up in the trash. Consider using natural or recycled gift wrap, or dress up your presents with thrift store finds, reused newspaper or fabric, or reusable wrapping bags.

  2. Have a very vegan holiday -- When looking for what to get for your loved ones, seek out brands that are sustainable and cruelty-free. You can find everything you need for your loved ones, from cozy clothes to drinkware to watches and candles and more. Having a holiday party? Try some tasty vegan recipes to replace meat-based dishes or bake some vegan cookies to satisfy your sweet tooth.

  3. Go plastic-free with your decor -- Say no to fake snow and find solar-powered string lights for some eco-conscious twinkle. Fill your home with the smell of fresh pine from a real tree and wreaths, not faux alternatives. Go for beeswax over paraffin when you’re curating your cute and cozy candle collection.

  4. Ditch single-use silverware (and cups) -- What better time to break out the real forks, knives, and stemware than during the holidays? Forgo paper and plastic and go with the real deal. Mother Earth will thank you and your guests will be impressed with your cutlery game!

  5. Buy less, donate more -- The holidays are a season of giving, so why not spend less on non-essential stuff and give back to those in need instead? Clear out your coat closets and donate them to local organizations or make an impact by giving money to a cause you (or your loved ones) care about.

We hope these ideas inspire you to make easy upgrades to your holiday routines so our celebrations can continue for many years to come!
