Sustainability Series: How You Can Make Every Day Earth Day With Your Family
A major part of taking steps to combat climate change is to leave our planet better than we found it for the future - and that means for our kids (or nieces and nephews or other little people in our lives). Making personal changes is one key way to do this, but teaching kids the importance of sustainability will help them develop healthy habits that they can take with them as they grow up.
Encourage Kids to Pick Up Trash
Start planet-friendly habits early by encouraging kids to pick up trash they see around your neighborhood - and make it a game! Take gloves and a trash bag with you on your adventure and see who can fill it up fastest.
Plant a Tree
One of the best things you can do for the environment is to plant a tree - even a small one - in your backyard. It’ll be something that grows up with your kids and helps clean the air as it matures. If you don’t have space, donate to a tree-planting charity in your child’s name.
Take Family Trips to State or National Parks
Explore the beautiful landscapes of the US while also instilling the values of conservation in your young ones by taking family vacations to state or national parks. Enroll your kids in the Junior Rangers Program or if they’re in fourth grade, they can participate in the Every Kid Outdoors initiative.
Curate a Learning Library
They say reading is fundamental with good reason. Make sure your kids have access to sustainability-focused books to help them grow their knowledge and passion for protecting the planet now and in the future. One recommendation to start is Winston of Churchill: One Polar Bear’s Battle Against Global Warming.
